Fashion Fights Poverty
What started as an experimental theme gala for the United Nations’ 60th anniversary in 2005 has grown to become one of the largest fashion fundraisers in Washington, DC. Fashion Fights Poverty’s mission is laid out in its name: to mobilize the fashion world — designers, craftsmen, and consumers alike — and help find effective and sustainable ways of alleviating poverty all around the world. The non-profit organization also collaborates with international anti-poverty initiatives.
Dress for Success
They say that clothes make the (wo)man, and Dress for Success is making sure that women all over the world are equipped with just the right support network, attire, and developmental tools needed for them to thrive at work and at home. According to Dress for Success sponsor and Woman Within president Stephanie Sobel, it’s more than giving away clothes; it’s about empowering women: “We want to support women through a lifetime of real experiences by empowering them to look great and feel confident.”
For over 30 years, Kids Charity K.I.D.S./Fashion Delivers has distributed over $1.3 billion worth of apparel, accessories, home furnishings, toys, and books to people affected by poverty and tragedy all around the world. The bulk of its donations, both financial and in kind, come from hundreds of partner companies in the fashion, home, and children’s industries. Individuals can also make donations through the K.I.D.S/Fashion Delivers website. Last year, the non-profit organization managed to raise $1.8 million in donations during its annual gala fundraiser.
